The Nigerian Army has honoured one of its personnel, Private Utim Terwase, with a cash reward of N500,000 after he reportedly turned down a bribe from a suspected notorious kidnapper.

Terwase was recognised for refusing to compromise his duty despite an alleged attempt by the suspect to pay him for his release.

According to military sources, the soldier had apprehended the suspect after he attempted to escape from custody. Rather than accept the money offered to him, Terwase maintained his position and ensured the suspect was handed over to the appropriate authorities.

The reward was approved by the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 3 Division of the Nigerian Army and Commander of Operation Enduring Peace, Major General Maxwell Dangana.

The presentation was made on Dangana’s behalf by the Commander of Sector 6, Colonel Philimon Malgwi, while the operation’s spokesperson, Captain Polycarp Chinonso Oteh, confirmed the development.

Speaking through Malgwi, the GOC praised Terwase for displaying integrity, discipline and commitment to his responsibilities.

He noted that the soldier had placed his professional obligations above personal financial benefits, describing his decision as an example of the conduct expected from members of the Nigerian Army.

Dangana explained that the N500,000 presented to Terwase was equivalent to the amount he reportedly refused to collect from the suspected kidnapper.

He urged other military personnel to follow the soldier’s example, stressing that honesty and accountability remained important values in the fight against criminal activities.

The Army chief also reaffirmed the commitment of Operation Enduring Peace to encouraging discipline, professionalism and ethical conduct among its troops.

He added that the military would continue to recognise personnel who demonstrate dedication and integrity while carrying out their duties.
