2027: Oshiomhole Dismisses Obi’s Presidential Alternative, Backs Tinubu’s Re-election

Senator Adams Oshiomhole has thrown his weight behind President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term, arguing that Nigeria cannot afford another change of leadership when the current administration is yet to fully consolidate its policies.

The Edo North lawmaker made the position known during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, while taking a swipe at opposition figures, particularly Peter Obi, whom he accused of failing to articulate practical solutions to the country’s challenges.

Oshiomhole questioned Obi’s response to concerns about national security, saying the former Anambra State governor had not provided a concrete explanation of how he would handle the problem differently. He also described Obi’s approach to governance as that of a trader focused on immediate returns rather than the long-term interests of the country.

The senator also brought former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration into the debate, criticising its handling of workers’ salaries and contrasting its foreign exchange policy with Tinubu’s decision to unify the exchange rate. He suggested that the 2027 election would offer Nigerians an opportunity to assess the records of the competing political camps.

On workers’ welfare, Oshiomhole defended the Federal Government’s approval of a monthly N70,000 transport allowance, arguing that the additional payment represented substantial relief for low-income earners.

The six-month intervention, which commenced in November 2026, was agreed upon following discussions between the Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on October 27. The arrangement also includes the settlement of outstanding peculiar allowances through three equal monthly payments.

The Trade Union Congress (TUC), however, has opposed the temporary arrangement, maintaining that workers deserve a lasting salary increase instead of a transport benefit that will expire after six months.
