Brake Failure Causes Container Truck to Overturn, Disrupts Traffic at Mile 12, Lagos

A container-laden truck overturned along the Mile 12 section of the Lagos-Ikorodu Road on Wednesday morning after reportedly suffering brake failure, leaving one person injured and causing traffic disruption.

The accident happened shortly after the Mile 12 Bridge, inward Ikorodu, when the driver reportedly lost control of the articulated vehicle and crashed into a culvert along the road median.

The truck was conveying two 20-foot containers filled with Natural Active Clay, also known as Bleaching Earth. The impact left the truck’s cabin on its side, damaged part of the road railing and caused some of its contents to spill onto the roadside.

Although no fatality was recorded, the truck’s motor boy sustained a leg injury and received medical attention.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu.

According to the agency, its Tiger Response Team from C3 received information about the crash at approximately 2:51 a.m. and arrived at the location about 15 minutes later.

LASEMA subsequently worked with the Nigeria Police Force and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to coordinate the rescue and recovery exercise.

A private recovery vehicle was initially deployed before a crane was brought in to lift the overturned truck and its containers. Traffic was temporarily diverted to allow the operation to proceed safely.

Following the successful lifting of the containers, the cargo was transferred back onto the truck and moved with the assistance of a towing vehicle to the LASTMA yard in Ojota for safekeeping and documentation.

The emergency agency confirmed that the recovery operation was completed and the obstruction cleared, allowing normal traffic movement to resume.

The incident has again drawn attention to the safety risks associated with heavy-duty trucks on Lagos roads, particularly concerns surrounding vehicle maintenance and mechanical failures that can endanger other road users.
