Ibom Air’s fleet has grown to 10 aircraft following the delivery of another Airbus A220-300, in a development the airline says will strengthen its capacity, efficiency and network expansion.
The latest aircraft, registered 5N-CDC, was handed over to the Akwa Ibom-based carrier at the Airbus A220 final assembly facility in Mirabel, Canada, on Thursday, after the signing of the Transfer of Title documents by the airline’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, George Uriesi.
The addition brings the airline’s A220 fleet to three, alongside seven Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Regional Jets (CRJ900s), further advancing its fleet renewal programme.
Uriesi described the delivery as a significant development for the airline, while crediting the Akwa Ibom State Government for its continued backing.
“We are most delighted to receive the third A220-300 into our growing, modern fleet,” he said.
The Ibom Air chief specifically acknowledged Governor Umo Eno, who is also the airline’s shareholder, for his confidence in the carrier and continued support for its growth.
Uriesi said the latest aircraft would contribute to improved safety, passenger experience, environmental performance and operational efficiency.
“The addition of this new A220 will have a significant positive impact on the business, making Ibom Air’s operations safer, more passenger-friendly, more environmentally responsible, and far more efficient,” he said.
He said the airline would continue to exploit the capabilities of the A220 as it expands its route network and consolidates its position in Nigeria and the West African aviation market.
The development also drew commendation from Airbus, with the Head of the A220 Programme and Chief Executive Officer of Airbus Canada, Guillaume Chevasson, describing Ibom Air’s decision to adopt the aircraft as a reflection of confidence in the A220 family.
“We are honoured by Ibom Air’s trust in Airbus and the A220 Family,” Chevasson said.
According to him, the aircraft offers the operational flexibility and fuel efficiency required for Ibom Air’s fleet modernisation, while providing passenger comfort and the performance needed for domestic and regional operations.
The latest acquisition further lowers the average age of Ibom Air’s fleet and strengthens its standing as one of Nigeria’s airlines operating a relatively young and modern fleet.
Ibom Air had, at the 2021 Dubai Airshow, placed a firm order for 10 Airbus A220-300 aircraft. The latest delivery is the second aircraft delivered from that order.
The airline received its first factory-new A220 in 2023 and subsequently acquired another A220-300 outright in 2024.
With the fleet now standing at 10 aircraft, the latest delivery is expected to give Ibom Air additional capacity to support its network expansion plans while improving its ability to meet growing demand on its domestic and regional routes.
