The Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) says its planned satellites will strengthen security operations by improving communication for troops and supporting efforts to track criminal activities.
According to Channels Television, NIGCOMSAT Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, disclosed this during an interview on Sunrise Daily on Monday.
She said the planned NigComSat-2A and NigComSat-2B satellites would provide additional technological support to Nigeria’s defence and security agencies, particularly personnel operating in difficult locations.
“Satellite comes in, and we can track criminals with it. Surveillance is part of the things you can do with satellites, if there’s a kidnapping somewhere – because these are the actual realities that we’re dealing with, with the development of 2A and 2B, without divulging too much, there are a lot of ways you can do surveillance,” she said.
Egerton-Idehen explained that security personnel operating in challenging areas sometimes face difficulties maintaining reliable communication with their command centres, adding that the new satellite infrastructure would help improve connectivity during operations.
She said the technology would also enhance surveillance capabilities, giving security agencies additional tools to monitor and respond to criminal activities.
The Federal Executive Council had earlier approved the acquisition and deployment of NigComSat-2A and 2B as part of efforts to expand internet access and improve connectivity across the country.
The NIGCOMSAT chief urged Nigerians to be patient with the satellite projects, noting that they are expected to deliver lasting benefits for national security and Nigeria’s digital economy.
