A social media appeal over the plight of a physically challenged couple in Oruk Anam Local Government Area has resulted in the couple receiving wheelchairs to ease their movement and improve their daily lives.
The couple, Elder and Mrs Nseobong Thompson of Ibesit Awa Udo, attracted public attention after photographs from the dedication of their child showed them attending the ceremony without wheelchairs to assist their mobility.
Moved by the images, Comfort 95.1FM presenter, Aniekere Akpakpan, shared the couple’s story online and appealed for support to enable them get mobility aids.
The appeal soon reached the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Princess Emem Ibanga, who responded by facilitating the provision of wheelchairs for the couple.
Ibanga presented the wheelchairs to the Thompsons at the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, turning what started as a social media appeal into practical assistance for the family.
For the couple, the intervention means more than simply having wheelchairs. It offers them greater freedom of movement and a measure of dignity in carrying out everyday activities, while also easing some of the challenges associated with living with physical disabilities.
Speaking during the presentation, Ibanga said the intervention was a reminder of the importance of paying attention to people facing difficult circumstances and responding when help is needed.
She said vulnerable persons should not be left to navigate their challenges alone, stressing that timely support could make a significant difference in the lives of families struggling with basic needs.
