Nigeria’s Reserves Hit $54.08bn, Highest in Nearly 18 Years

Nigeria’s external reserves have climbed to $54.08 billion, reaching their highest level in almost 18 years and signalling a significant strengthening of the country’s foreign-exchange buffer.

According to data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the latest figure represents a $1.42 billion increase from the $52.66 billion recorded on August 19, 2026.

The reserve position has now risen by $8.52 billion, or 18.7 per cent, from the $45.56 billion recorded on January 2. The growth has come steadily over the past eight months, placing the reserves well above the CBN’s 2026 projection.

The current level is particularly notable because the last time Nigeria’s reserves were around the $54 billion mark was December 22, 2008, when the stock stood at approximately $54.21 billion, according to the CBN’s historical data.

The latest surge has been particularly pronounced since late August. The reserves crossed $53 billion on August 24, reaching $53.11 billion, before rising to $53.30 billion on August 26 and $53.51 billion on August 28.

The upward trend continued through the end of the month, with reserves reaching $53.81 billion on August 31 before advancing further to the latest $54.08 billion figure.

The development puts Nigeria in a stronger position to absorb external shocks and support foreign-exchange obligations, while also providing a larger cushion against volatility in the international and domestic currency markets.
