Miva Open University has expanded its operations to Akwa Ibom State with the opening of a study centre in Uyo.
This development opens door for students and working residents seeking access to university education through open and distance learning.
The Uyo Study Centre, located at No. 26 Udo Udoma Avenue, was unveiled weekend by the Commissioner for Information, Dr Aniekan Umanah, who represented Governor Umo Eno at the ceremony.
Umanah said the establishment of the centre was a welcome addition to the state’s educational landscape and reaffirmed the Eno administration’s commitment to expanding access to quality education and developing human capital.
He said education remained central to the ARISE Agenda, noting that the state government had continued to implement programmes aimed at equipping young people with the knowledge and skills required to compete in a rapidly changing world.
The Commissioner assured private educational institutions and other stakeholders of the state government’s continued support and partnership, while commending Miva Open University for choosing Akwa Ibom to host one of its study centres.
He expressed optimism that the university’s presence would create more opportunities for students and contribute to the development of skilled manpower in the state.
Earlier, the Chief Operating Officer of Miva Open University, Aniekeme Umoh, said the Uyo centre marked a new phase in the institution’s relationship with Akwa Ibom.
Umoh said the university’s mission of providing accessible and relevant higher education aligned with the state government’s focus on education, human capital development, youth empowerment and shared prosperity.
She disclosed that Miva Open University, which commenced operations with about 500 students, had grown to more than 34,000 students.
According to her, the Uyo centre would provide students with a conducive environment to study, interact with other learners and access opportunities within the university’s wider academic community.
A 100-level Computer Science student, Solomon Egheose, commended the university’s management for maintaining high academic standards and providing students with quality learning opportunities.
Miva Open University is licensed by the National Universities Commission and operates as an Open and Distance Learning institution.
