Uyo may be heading for a major transportation overhaul, with the Akwa Ibom State Government considering flyovers, wider roads and a possible monorail linking the airport corridor with the city centre as the state capital expands.
The proposed shift from conventional road development to a broader mass-transit strategy was disclosed by the Commissioner for Works and Fire Services, Prof. Eno Ibanga, who said the government was working on an urban expansion plan aimed at preparing Uyo for the demands of a growing metropolitan population.
At the centre of the plan is a possible monorail connecting Victor Attah International Airport with major parts of Uyo. If eventually adopted, the system would represent a significant departure from the city’s present dependence on conventional road transportation and could provide a dedicated mass-transit corridor for commuters.
Ibanga, however, stressed the long-term nature of the monorail proposal. No construction date, route length, project cost, contractor or completion timeline has been announced, meaning the proposal remains under consideration rather than an ongoing construction project.
In the immediate term, government is looking at relieving pressure at major traffic points through flyovers, including proposed interventions around the major roundabout and Ibom Plaza. The Plaza proposal is linked to the master plan for the redevelopment of the civic and commercial space, with the flyover expected to separate vehicular movement from activities around the plaza.
Road capacity is also expected to increase, with Brook Street among the routes identified for expansion alongside other strategic corridors. Ibanga said discussions were ongoing with property owners and relevant institutions where additional right-of-way would be required, with compensation expected to be based on proper valuation.
The proposed urban expansion comes against the backdrop of a much larger road programme across the state. Government has reported that its infrastructure programme now covers 1,305 kilometres of roads and 40 bridges, while the 7.86-kilometre Ring Road III dual carriage project is already linking Idoro Road in Uyo through Ibiono Ibom to Itak in Ikono Local Government Area.
For a city whose growth is increasingly stretching its existing transportation network, the significance of the proposed interventions lies in their attempt to anticipate congestion rather than merely respond to it. The plan places road expansion, grade-separated intersections and mass transit within a single conversation about how people will move around Uyo in the years ahead.
The airport corridor could become particularly important under the proposed model as Akwa Ibom pursues expanded aviation and smart-city ambitions. The government has already been upgrading facilities around Victor Attah International Airport, while a high-speed digital backbone was activated there in August as part of its wider Smart City initiative.
The proposed flyovers and possible monorail therefore mark a potentially important turning point in Uyo’s development story: from a city largely expanding through conventional road construction to one beginning to contemplate a metropolitan transport system. But whether that vision becomes reality will depend on the completion of planning, funding, land acquisition and other technical processes behind the proposals.
