The Ebonyi State Government has shut down a guest house in Abakaliki after security operatives arrested more than 30 suspected commercial sex workers and recovered substances suspected to be illicit drugs during an enforcement operation.

Channels Television reported that the operation took place on Tuesday and involved the commissioners for Capital City Development and Urban Planning, Richard Ugo Idike, and Internal Security, Prince Etta Uka Ude, alongside security personnel and a ministry task force.

The facility, which authorities described as an unapproved building, came under scrutiny over security concerns surrounding its activities. Items recovered during the operation reportedly included wrappers containing substances identified as “Colos” and Indian hemp.

Following the discovery, Idike ordered the immediate and indefinite closure of the premises pending compliance with the state’s development regulations. He also directed the property owner to appear before the ministry and explain the circumstances surrounding the building’s use.

The commissioner warned property owners against operating without the necessary government approvals, stressing that unauthorised premises would not be allowed to threaten public safety or undermine urban planning regulations.

Ude, meanwhile, called on security agencies to strengthen surveillance of commercial establishments across Abakaliki to prevent business premises from being used as bases for criminal activities. He said the state government, under Governor Francis Nwifuru, remained committed to protecting residents and maintaining public order.

Channels Television reported that the arrested suspects were in police custody for further investigation, while security operatives continued efforts to locate the guest house owner.
