Ondo Mob Storms Police Station Over Farmer’s Death, 14 Arrested

Fourteen people have been arrested in Ondo State following a violent attack on a police station in Ala community, Akure North Local Government Area, over the killing of a local farmer, Rasheed Hassan.

Two police officers were injured by gunfire during the unrest, which also disrupted efforts by security operatives to move two suspects linked to the farmer’s death to Akure.

Hassan’s body was reportedly discovered at General Camp, within a government forest reserve, on October 24, 2026. He was said to have suffered deep cuts to his head and other parts of his body, while some of his belongings were missing.

Two suspects were subsequently apprehended on October 26 by the Ala youth president in connection with the killing.

However, tensions escalated when the youth leader attempted to hand the suspects over to the police. An angry crowd reportedly demanded that the suspects be released to them, forcing the youth leader to seek safety at the Ala Divisional Police Headquarters.

The situation soon turned violent as the crowd followed him to the station and began throwing stones and other dangerous objects at the facility.

Police tactical teams later rescued the suspects at about 1:45 a.m. on October 27. But the operation was not without further violence, as officers transporting the suspects to Akure were attacked along the way.

Two officers sustained gunshot injuries, reportedly from pellets fired from a pump-action gun. They were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Following the incident, the Ondo State Police Command arrested 14 suspects over their alleged roles in the attack on the station, assault on police personnel and obstruction of the operation to rescue the suspects.

The state Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, condemned the violence and cautioned residents against taking the law into their own hands.

The command has also deployed additional security personnel to the community to prevent further attacks and restore peace.

Meanwhile, investigations are continuing into both Hassan’s killing and the attack on the police station.
